INFO:
The Bethlehem Steel are considered the first Philadelphia-based team. They were founded in 1907 and even though they had the headquarters in Bethlehem, a city 50 miles from Philadelphia, they often played in the Philadelphia stadium. The Philadelphia Union, the current Philadelphia main team, consider the Bethlehem Steel to be their oldest predecessor to the point that they founded their reserve team in 2015 and named it after the Steel before renaming it Philadelphia Union II in 2019. The Bethlehem Steel are also celebrated in the Philadelphua Union's website.
In 1921, a second team from Philadelphia was founded: the Philadelphia Field Club. This team incorporated the Bethlehem Steel for the first season, but starting from 1922 two teams from Bethlehem existed. The Philadelphia Field Club folded in 1928 while the Bethlehem Steel resisted for two more years and dissolved in 1930.
Six year later, Philadelphia saw a comeback in American soccer. The Philadelphia German-Americans were founded in 1933. They changed name to Philadelphia Americans in 1941 due to the events of World War II and eventually to Uhrik Truckers in 1953. The team folded in 1966.
A team that kept the identity of Philadelphia in its name too was instead founded in 1936: the Passon Phillies, also known as Philadelphia Passon. The name was changed to Philadelphia Nationals in 1942. This team folded in 1954 and was revived some years later by another team: the Philadelphia Ukrainians.
The Philadelphia Ukrainians were founded in 1950 but had their first professional season in 1957. The team was suspended and forced to change name starting from 1958. Therefore, they became the Ukrainian Nationals. They dropped the "Nationals" part of their in 1968, changing back to Philadelphia Ukrainians. The team quit the professional status in 1970 and is still active today but only at amateur level.
The Ukrainians, though, were Philadelphia's main team until 1967, year of the foundation of the NASL. In fact, that same year a new team from Philadelphia was founded that took part to the very first NASL season: the Philadelphia Spartans. Unfortunately, this team folded only one year later but was revived in 1969. The second interation of the Spartans, though, played in the ASL, the second tier of the American league, and lasted until 1973.
The next team from Philadelphia to play in the NASL were the Philadelphia Atoms, founded in 1973 right after the dissolution of the Spartans. They immediately won the NASL title in their first year. They folded in 1976 and were replaced in 1978 by the Philadelphia Fury. The Fury had a shorter life, spending three seasons in the NASL and folding in 1980. They came back in 2011 as an amateur team but dissolved in 2019.
It took Philadelphia 28 years to have another professional team. The Philadelphia Union were founded in 2008 and played their first MLS season in 2010. They're still an active team in the league up to 2026.
