Attack-MindedINFO:Francisco Valdés was a Chilean footballer who played as a midfielder. Born in Santiago de Chile (19/03/1943), he began his career at Colo-Colo, making his debut on January 26, 1961, in a match against Cerro Porteño of Paraguay. Just one minute after entering the field as a substitute for forward Bernardo Bello, he scored his first professional goal with his first touch of the ball. That same year, on May 27, he officially debuted in the Chilean League against O'Higgins. Valdés is the all-time top scorer in Chilean football and for Colo-Colo in official tournaments, with 180 goals (178 in 353 national championship matches, plus 1 goal in the Pre-Libertadores Playoff and another in the 1968 Torneo Metropolitano fifth-place decider). He is also the second-highest Chilean scorer in the Copa Libertadores, with 20 goals in 44 matches, trailing only Esteban Paredes—a remarkable feat for a midfielder who was also an exceptional playmaker. He was the brain of the legendary 1973 Colo-Colo squad, alongside Carlos Caszely, one of the team’s brightest stars. With Colo-Colo, he won the Chilean league title in 1963 and 1972 and was runner-up in the 1973 Copa Libertadores. Valdés also played a key role in Deportes Arica’s promotion to the Chilean First Division in 1981. In 1983, he played his final tournament, the Copa Chile, representing Audax Italiano.
Widely regarded as one of the most important players in Chilean football history and an iconic figure for Colo-Colo, Valdés held the record as the second-highest scorer in the Chilean league with 215 official goals until October 5, 2019, when Esteban Paredes surpassed him with 216 goals. He also ranks as the second-highest Chilean scorer in Copa Libertadores history, with 20 goals in 44 matches, later overtaken by Paredes (22 goals in 2018). Known for his ambidextrous ball control, precise long passes, and deadly free kicks and penalties, Valdés was the attacking midfielder and captain of the Chilean national team at the 1974 FIFA World Cup in Germany.
