Defence-MindedINFO:Cristian Romero is an Argentine footballer who plays as a centre-back. Born in Córdoba, Argentina (27/04/1998), he began his career in the youth divisions of Club Atlético Belgrano. He made his professional debut on August 28, 2016, in a Primera División match against Independiente. A month later, he played in both legs of the 2016 Copa Sudamericana round of 16 against Coritiba. After two seasons and 19 total appearances with Belgrano, he moved to Italy in July 2018, joining Genoa in Serie A. He scored his first professional goal in his second match for Genoa, in a 2–2 draw with Udinese on October 28, 2018, though he was also sent off in that same game. In July 2019, Juventus acquired his rights for €26 million and immediately loaned him back to Genoa for the 2019–20 season. In September 2020, he was loaned to Atalanta with an option to buy. In his first season there, he was voted the best defender in Serie A, helping the team finish third and qualify for the UEFA Champions League. At the start of the 2021–22 season, Atalanta exercised his purchase option but promptly transferred him to the Premier League. On August 6, 2021, Romero was loaned to Tottenham Hotspur with an option to buy. He made his Premier League debut on August 15, 2021, in a 1–0 victory over Manchester City. The following year, Tottenham triggered the option to sign him permanently. During the 2024–25 season, he played a pivotal role in Tottenham's run to the UEFA Europa League final, a victory that ended the club's 17-year trophy drought and 41-year wait for an international title; for his performance, he was named the MVP of the final against Manchester United.
At the youth international level, Romero captained the Argentina U-20 team at the 2017 South American U-20 Championship in Ecuador, where the team finished fourth and qualified for the FIFA U-20 World Cup. He made his senior debut on June 3, 2021, in a 1–1 draw against Chile in a World Cup qualifier, being named the standout player of the match. He scored his first international goal just five days later, on June 8, 2021, in a qualifier against Colombia. He was called up by coach Lionel Scaloni for the 2021 Copa América, where, despite being hampered by a knee injury that kept him out of the quarter‑finals and semi‑finals, he started the final against Brazil and helped Argentina win the title after 28 years. In mid‑2022, he was a starter in the Copa de Campeones Conmebol‑UEFA, playing 85 minutes in a 3–0 victory over Italy to secure his second trophy with the national team. He was an undisputed starter at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, playing all seven matches and winning the tournament, solidifying himself as a key pillar of the Argentine defense alongside Nicolás Otamendi. In 2024, he was again a starting centre‑back in Argentina's victorious Copa América campaign, playing five of the six possible matches and earning his fourth major title with the Albiceleste. Romero's playing style is defined by intense aggression, physical strength, and a fearless commitment to every challenge. He himself has acknowledged this reputation, stating, "I was taught to defend like this in Argentina. I love this game, I have this essence". He combines this combative spirit with excellent ball‑playing ability, precise long passing, and keen anticipation, making him a modern centre‑back capable of both decisive tackles and initiating attacks. His leadership and unwavering competitive mentality have made him not only a defensive cornerstone for both Tottenham and Argentina but also, in 2025, a captain for his club and a key leader for the national team.
