BalancedINFO:Enzo Fernández is an Argentine footballer who plays as a midfielder. Born in San Martín, Buenos Aires (17/01/2001), he began his career in the youth divisions of Club Atlético River Plate. He made his professional debut for River Plate on March 4, 2020, in a Copa Libertadores match against LDU Quito. In August 2020, he was loaned to Defensa y Justicia, where he established himself as a key player, winning the 2020 Copa Sudamericana and the 2021 Recopa Sudamericana and earning a spot in the tournament's Ideal Team. He returned to River Plate in mid-2021 at the request of coach Marcelo Gallardo, immediately becoming a starter and helping the club win the 2021 Argentine Primera División and the Trofeo de Campeones. After a standout start to the 2022 season, he was transferred to S.L. Benfica of Portugal in July 2022. His adaptation to European football was immediate; he scored on his debut and was named the Primeira Liga's Midfielder of the Month for August, October, and November 2022. His meteoric rise culminated in a British-record transfer to Chelsea F.C. on January 31, 2023, for €121 million, making him the most expensive signing in the history of English football at that time. At Chelsea, he became a fundamental pillar of the midfield. After initially adapting to the Premier League, he won his first title with the club on May 28, 2025, by scoring the equalizing goal in a 4–1 victory over Real Betis in the UEFA Europa Conference League final. Six weeks later, on July 13, 2025, he won the FIFA Club World Cup with Chelsea, starting in the 3–0 final victory over Paris Saint-Germain.
Despite having debuted for the Argentine senior national team only on September 23, 2022, in a friendly against Honduras, Fernández experienced a vertiginous and historic ascent with the Albiceleste. Selected by Lionel Scaloni for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, he went from substitute to undisputed starter during the tournament. He scored a crucial goal in the group stage against Mexico and played all seven matches, including the final, as Argentina won its third world title. For his performances, he was awarded the FIFA Young Player Award for the best young player of the tournament. He continued as a key starter in the following campaigns, winning the 2024 Copa América in the United States, where he played in five matches. As of late 2025, he has accumulated 38 international caps and scored 5 goals. Fernández is a complete, dynamic, and modern central midfielder. He excels in his ability to connect lines with precise short and long passing, his exceptional vision of the game, and his powerful long-range shot. Despite not having a particularly imposing physique, he compensates with intense dynamism, high tactical intelligence, and a tremendous work rate, being effective both in possession and in defensive recovery. His leadership on the field has been recognized at Chelsea, where he has worn the captain's armband, and he has openly expressed his dream of one day captaining the Argentine national team.
