BalancedINFO:Leandro Paredes is an Argentine footballer who plays as a defensive midfielder. Born in San Justo, Buenos Aires, Argentina (29/06/1994), he began his career in the youth academy of Club Atlético Boca Juniors. He made his professional debut for Boca Juniors on November 6, 2010, in a Primera División match against Argentinos Juniors. After establishing himself as a great advanced midfielder, he moved to Europe in 2014, initially on loan to A.C. Chievo Verona in Italy. He subsequently joined A.S. Roma, first on loan and then permanently in 2015 for a reported €6.067 million. To gain playing time, he spent the 2015-16 season on loan at Empoli F.C., where coach Marco Giampaolo definitively converted him into a central defensive midfielder, a pivotal moment in his career. His performances earned him a €23 million transfer to Zenit Saint Petersburg in 2017. After two successful seasons in Russia, he joined Paris Saint-Germain in January 2019 for an initial €40 million. At PSG, he became a key figure, winning three Ligue 1 titles (2019, 2020, 2022) and multiple domestic cups. He spent the 2022-23 season on loan at Juventus before returning to A.S. Roma in August 2023. In a highly anticipated homecoming, Paredes returned to his boyhood club, Boca Juniors, on July 11, 2025, signing from Roma. His impact was immediate, transforming the team's midfield and leadership as they fought for the 2025 Torneo Clausura title.
Paredes debuted for the Argentine senior national team on June 13, 2017, scoring in a 6–0 friendly win over Singapore. He quickly became a fundamental part of Lionel Scaloni's project, serving as a key midfield organizer. He was a member of the Copa América-winning squads in 2021 and 2024. His most significant achievement came at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, where he was part of the champion squad. He played a crucial psychological and technical role in the team's success, notably converting decisive penalties in the shootout victories against the Netherlands in the quarter-finals and against France in the final. Paredes's playing style is defined by his exceptional technical quality, profound game intelligence, and leadership. He is a deep-lying playmaker renowned for his sublime long and short passing, ability to control the tempo, and break opposing lines with vertical passes. Beyond his technique, he is a fierce competitor and a natural leader. Since his return to Boca, he has been credited with mentoring younger players, bringing order to the midfield, and restoring competitiveness to the team, with many analysts considering him the best player in Argentine football at the time.
