INFO:
Nacho Fernández is an Argentine footballer who plays as a midfielder. Born in Castelli, Buenos Aires (12/01/1990), he started his pro career for Gimnasia y Esgrima (LP) in 2010. In 2011 he was loaned for one year to C.A. Temperley. He scored 10 goals in the 25 games played in the tournament, being the gasolero's top scorer in the season, and also scored a goal in the 2011-12 Copa Argentina. At the end of his loan in July 2012 he returned to Gimnasia y Esgrima (LP) where he continued to play as a left midfielder, having scored three goals in the Primera B Nacional tournament and one valid for the 2012-13 Copa Argentina. After achieving promotion, already in the highest division in Argentina, he played his team's first game in the 2013 Torneo Inicial against River Plate. He managed to score his first goal in the First Division in the second game of the 2013 championship, against Rosario Central. At the beginning of 2016, he joined River Plate, making his debut as a starter in one of the summer superclásicos against Boca Jrs., with a good performance. He then became one of the regular starting players, being one of the pillars of the team in the first half of 2017, in which River Plate finished second in the league and first in the group stage of the Copa Libertadores. He also won the 2018 Copa Libertadores, being a key piece for the "millionaire". Later he was transferred to Atlético Mineiro in exchange for $5.800.000. In Brazil, he signed a contract for three seasons but ended up returning to River at the end of 2022 to play River Plate's first season without Marcelo Gallardo as a head coach since 2014. With 36 goals and 39 assists in 237 games (by the end of 2022), he has been one of the most outstanding midfielders of the Núñez team in recent years. For Atlético-MG he scored 20 goals and 21 assists in 109 games, and for Gimnasia y Esgrima (LP), 17 goals and 19 assists in 116 games. Among his individual distinctions are having been part of the Team of the Copa Argentina three times (2016, 2017, and 2020), twice in the South American Team of the Year (2019 and 2020), a Bola de Prata for being the best midfielder in Brazil (2021), and was also part of IFFHS' CONMEBOL's Ideal Team (2022). Furthermore, in 2020 he came second in the voting for the best South American player of the year, behind Marinho, from Santos, and above Gustavo Gómez, from Palmeiras.
