Leonardo Ponzio is an Argentinian former footballer who played as a defensive midfielder. Born in Las Rosas, Santa Fe (29/01/1982), Ponzio came up through the youth ranks of Newell's Old Boys. He made his debut at Newell's on July 17, 2000, in the 19th round of the Torneo Clausura. Ponzio would arrive at Real Zaragoza to play in the 2003-04 Spanish First Division and in his first games he became one of the figures of the Spanish team, scoring important goals and earning his position. In that same season, he would win the 2003-04 Copa del Rey, beating none other than Real Madrid in the final and leaving Barcelona behind in the quarterfinals. Zaragoza qualified to play the Spanish Super Cup against Valencia, league champion that same season; Ponzio would achieve his second title in the maños by winning 3-1 in the second leg despite having lost 1-0 in the first leg. In the maño club, he managed to make history by being the foreign player with the most games played. In his second cycle in Zaragoza, he played from 2008 to 2011 and was promoted to the First Division in the 2008-09 season. He served at River Plate in two stages, the first was between 2007 and 2008, and the second was from 2012 to 2021. At the Núñez club, he has achieved 17 official titles; ten at the national level and seven at the international level. He is the player with the most titles in the history of River Plate and one of the most winners at the international level in Argentina.
He was international with the Argentine National Team between 2003 and 2007, and in 2013, playing 8 games in total. He was part of the 2001 Youth World Cup champion team, playing in all seven matches of the tournament. He also achieved fourth place in the 1999 South American U-17. He was a member of the Ideal Team of the Copa Libertadores on three occasions: 2015, 2016, and 2018 (winning it twice), he was elected the best player of the Recopa Sudamericana in 2016 and in 2020 he was awarded the Platinum Konex award for the best player of the decade in Argentine football.
