Marcelo Saralegui is a former footballer who played as an advanced midfielder and as a side midfielder. Born in Montevideo, Uruguay (18/05/1971), he started his pro career at Club Nacional in 1989, at the age of 18. In 1990 he was loaned to Atlético de Madrid, although he returned after six months. Upon his return to the Uruguayan club, he began to gain many minutes, establishing himself as an important player on the team. In 1992 he was sold to Torino in Italy, although he was not able to play many games in the granata squad. In 1994 he arrived in Argentina to play for Racing Club, where he put together very good performances. A year later, he was sold to the recently promoted Colón de Santa Fe: there, Saralegui displayed the best football of his career, establishing himself as one of the best number 8 of that time in Argentina and taking the Santa Fe club to its first participation in the Copa Libertadores, finishing in the quarterfinals, and a runner-up in the Primera División. After leaving Colón in 1998, Saralegui would continue his career at Independiente, and return to Uruguay to play for Defensor Sporting, Club Nacional, Fénix, and Uruguay Montevideo, where he would finally retire from professional activity in 2004 at the age of 33. He was international with the Uruguayan national football team between 1992 and 1997, playing 33 games and scoring 6 goals. He played in 3 Copa América for la celeste, in 1993, 1995, and 1997, winning the 1995 Copa América held in Uruguay.
