Born in Valentín Alsina, Lanús (01/05/1986), he started his pro career in 2003 for C.A. Lanús, at the age of 17. From an early age, Valeri was one of the most important players on the team. In 2007, Valeri would become champion of the Torneo Apertura, the first local title in the history of Lanús, being one of the stars of the team, along with José Sand and who would later be his teammate in Portland, Sebastián Blanco. In 2009 Valeri would have his first experience outside Argentina, having been loaned to FC Porto, in Portugal. After not being taken into account by manager André Vilas-Boas, Valeri is loaned again, this time to UD Almería in Spain. In his last three years in Lanús, Valeri would establish himself as one of the best players in Argentina, and finally, in 2013 he would be loaned to the Portland Timbers of the MLS. Only 6 months later, and after Valeri scored 5 goals and 8 assists, Portland decided to enable the purchase option, signing Valeri to a multi-year contract. During his stay with the Timbers, Valeri would become the most important player in their history. He was named to the MLS Best XI 3 times (2013, 2014, 2017) and MLS All-Star 4 times (2014, 2016, 2017, 2018); In 2013 he was the league's top assister, and in 2015, after scoring 21 goals and 11 assists, he was named the MLS MVP. For the Timbers, he would also become champion of the MLS Cup in 2015, scoring the winning goal, and in 2020 of the MLS is Back Tournament, the only two official titles for the Oregon-based club. Valeri would retire from professional activity in 2022 for the Portland Timbers, after having returned for half a season to his childhood club, C.A. Lanús. On 16 March 2011, Valeri made his international debut for Argentina at the Estadio San Juan del Bicentenario in a friendly against Venezuela. Argentina won 4–1. Valeri would go on to make just two more appearances with Argentina, both in 2011, against Ecuador and Paraguay. In June 2011, prior to Copa América, Valeri was included in the provisional squad for Argentina by manager Sergio Batista but was cut from the final 23-man squad. Spoiler: show |
