Nicknamed "Cata" due to being one of the few footballers born in the city of Catamarca (13/07/1979), Díaz made his professional debut at Rosario Central in the 1999 Copa Conmebol. In the Rosario club, he would end up playing 118 games until 2003 when he was transferred to Cruz Azul in Mexico. After only staying one season at Cruz Azul he returned to Argentina, specifically to C.A. Colón, then coached by Alfio Basile, where he became the team captain and one of the best defenders in Argentina. Shortly after, he received offers from Boca Juniors and River Plate; With Alfio Basile as the new coach of the xeneizes, Cata arrived at Boca Juniors, for around $3 million, the most expensive sale in Colón's history at the time. At Boca Juniors he would maintain a very high level, winning 4 titles, including the 2007 Copa Libertadores in which he played all the games as a starter. In 2006 he was named to South America's Ideal Team. In 2007 after his excellent Copa Libertadores, he was bought by Getafe C.F. from Spain for 4 million euros. There, he would play in the UEFA Europa League for the first time in the club's history, reaching the quarterfinals, and would also reach a Copa del Rey final. In June 2012, after becoming one of the players with the most appearances in azulón history, Cata signed for Atlético de Madrid. At Atlético de Madrid he would win two titles, but with little participation. Finally, in 2013, and after some ups and downs regarding his return to Rosario Central that ultimately never happened, Cata Díaz returned to Argentine football to play again for Boca Juniors. In this new stage in Boca, he would win two titles, being a very important piece in the team that in those years was going through a period of change. In 2016, Cata Díaz returned to Getafe C.F., which at that time was playing in the Second Division of Spanish football to help them achieve promotion to La Liga. After this feat, Cata, already of advanced age, signed for C.F. Fuenlabrada of the Segunda División B (Spain's 3rd division) where he would remain for 2 years. In 2019 he signed for Nueva Chicago, from the Argentine second division, and would finally retire from professional activity at C.D. Móstoles at the age of 42 years. He was international for the Argentine National Team on 12 occasions. He would make his debut in a friendly against Uruguay on July 17, 2003, that would end in a 2-2 draw. For Argentina, Díaz played in the 2007 Copa América and the 2010 World Cup qualifiers, scoring his only goal for Argentina on matchday 13 of the qualifying rounds in a 1-0 victory against Colombia.
