Defence-MindedINFO:Edgar Oscar Fernández is an Argentinian former footballer who played as a left-back. Born in Santa Fe de la Vera Cruz (21/02/1951), Fernández started his professional career at Colón de Santa Fe in 1972. His first match took place on February 27, 1972, against C.A. Lanús, in a 2-0 win. In Colón he would be part of historic teams: in 1975 he would form, together with his teammates Enzo Trossero, Hugo Villaverde, and Rubén Araos, what is commonly called the best defensive line in the history of Colón. His first goal came on March 24, 1974, in a 4-1 win against Boca Juniors: Fernández saw goalkeeper Sánchez far from his goal and fired a shot from behind the middle of the field (approximately 60 meters away), sentencing Colón's biggest victory over Boca Juniors ever. His last goal in Colón de Santa Fe would be on October 19, 1977, against Racing Club, scoring with a header, although his goal was overshadowed by the sad injury of his teammate Hugo Villarruel at the hands of Pablo Cárdenas. In 1979, Fernández left the red and black institution after 277 games and 6 goals, being one of the players who has worn the Colón jersey the most. His career would continue at Estudiantes de La Plata, Independiente Rivadavia, and would finally culminate in 1983 while playing for Temperley.
His debut in the Argentine National Team would take place on August 21, 1975, within the framework of the Copa Ciudad de México, a friendly football tournament that served as preparation for the Pan American Games of that year. Fernández started in a 6-0 victory against the United States. Fernández would also play in the other two games of that cup, a 2-0 victory against Costa Rica on August 28, 1975, and a 1-1 draw against Mexico on August 31, 1975.
