Gonzalo Martínez is an Argentinian footballer who plays as a left-midfielder or advanced midfielder. Born in Guaymallén, Mendoza (13/06/1993), Martínez began his professional career in 2011 at C.A. Huracán, back then in the Second Division of Argentine football. 'Pity' (as he is commonly known) established himself as a starter in the 2012-13 season, and by 2014, he was already considered one of the best players in the division, helping the Balloon to promote to the First Division and winning that year's Copa Argentina. In 2015, River Plate paid $4.5M for his transfer, making his official debut in the first leg of the Recopa Argentina that year against San Lorenzo. Pity had a very slow start at the Núñez club, causing general discontent among the fans, who even went to the extent of setting his car on fire demanding better performances. Despite this, in the 2017-18 season, Pity showed an impressive improvement in his level of play, being particularly crucial in winning the 2018 Copa Libertadores, the fourth in the history of the riverplatense club. That same year, he was awarded the South American Footballer of the Year, becoming the eighth player from the red and white club to achieve this exclusive award. In 2019, he was sold to MLS's Atlanta United, and just a year later, he was sold to Al-Nassr FC from Saudi Arabia for the incredible sum of $18M. His performances at the Saudi club were quite good, but he was constantly plagued by injuries, which became increasingly recurrent and serious, having suffered 2 ACL tears (one in each knee). Therefore, by August 2023, he decided to return to River Plate, terminating his contract with the Arab club to undergo his treatment in Argentina. In January 2024, and after just a few games since his return to the Millionaire team, Pity suffered another ACL injury, sidelining him for more than 8 months.
On August 17, 2018, Martínez was called up by Lionel Scaloni to the Argentine national team to play the friendly matches on September 8 and 11 against Guatemala and Colombia. On September 8, Martínez made his debut for the Albiceleste against Guatemala, scoring a penalty goal in the 27th minute. Pity completed the tour playing at a very high level against the Colombian national team, in a match that ended in a 0-0 draw. In March 2019, he was called up for a friendly match preparing for that year's Copa América against the Venezuelan national team. Pity is particularly remembered for his excellent performances against the classic rival Boca Juniors, scoring four goals against them in knockout stages, including a goal in the 2018 Copa Libertadores final, which is considered the most important goal in the history of River Plate.
