Born in Santiago de Chile (14/07/1962), he began his career with Universidad Católica in 1982, where he became one of the club's greatest idols after spending over 14 seasons with the team. With Universidad Católica, Toledo won the Copa Chile in 1983, 1991, and 1995, the Copa República in 1984, the Primera División in 1984, and the Copa Interamericana in 1994, one of the most important titles in the history of Universidad Católica. After leaving the club in 1996, Toledo played for Deportes Temuco in 1997, Santiago Wanderers in 1998, and retired professionally with Coquimbo Unido in 1999. He represented the Chilean national team between 1991 and 1994, delivering notable performances for his country, such as in the 1991 Copa América. Despite Chile finishing 3rd as hosts, Toledo was selected as part of the Ideal Team of America. His last match for Chile was on May 18, 1994, in a friendly against Argentina at the Estadio Nacional. In 1991, Toledo finished third in the South American Footballer of the Year award, behind Oscar Ruggeri and Ramón Díaz. In 2010, the IFFHS ranked him as the best Chilean goalkeeper from 1985 to 2010 and the fifty-fourth best goalkeeper in the world during that period. Patricio Toledo was known for his agility, excellent jumping ability, quick reflexes, positioning, and bravery when coming out to claim crosses and facing opponents one-on-one. However, he wasn't particularly known for holding onto the ball securely, often giving away rebounds. Occasionally, he would neglect to cover the near post of his goal, although he had a great defense of his stronger side. He was quite aggressive in coming out to confront attackers in one-on-one situations, often attempting to intercept plays far from his goal, which led to him receiving several yellow cards for fouls or handling the ball outside the penalty area. In the Chilean league during the 1990s, his main rival was Sergio Vargas, the goalkeeper for Universidad de Chile. While Vargas was way more reliable with his hands, Toledo was known for his spectacular saves thanks to his cat-like reflexes. Alongside Nelson Tapia and Sergio Livingstone, Patricio Toledo is considered one of the best goalkeepers to have played for C.D. Universidad Católica and one of the most significant goalkeepers in the history of Chilean football. |
