Fernando Astengo is a Chilean former footballer who played as a central defender. Born in Santiago, Chile (08/01/1980), he made his professional debut for Unión Española in 1978. Initially, he played as a midfielder until coaches Pedro García and Germán Cornejo recommended he play as a central defender, given his playing characteristics. He was one of the top revelations of the early 1980s at Unión Española, known for his technical ability in coverages and excellent sense of timing and distance. In late 1985, he became a free agent. After considering several offers, he accepted a contract with Colo-Colo, where he won the Primera División in 1986. A year later, in 1987, he joined Brazil's Grêmio, where he had successful campaigns and was named Best Center-Back of South America in 1988 by the Uruguayan newspaper El País. In 1989, as vice-captain of the Chilean National Team, he was part of the infamous "Maracanazo de Chile", which resulted in a 5-year ban from playing football for him, and a lifetime ban for his teammate, goalkeeper Roberto Rojas. After serving the FIFA-imposed punishment, he returned to professional football in 1993 at the age of 33. In 1995, he achieved promotion to the Primera División with Audax Italiano. However, he did not reach the same heights as before and retired definitively in 1998, playing for his first club, Unión Española, after a 6-1 loss to Coquimbo Unido in the Promotion Playoff.
