BalancedINFO:Leopoldo Vallejos is a former Chilean footballer who played as a goalkeeper. Born in Santiago, Chile (16/07/1944), he began his career at Universidad Católica in 1964 at the age of 20. For several years, Vallejos was one of Universidad's most promising prospects, considered—during his time in the club's youth divisions—as the future of Chilean goalkeeping due to his explosive style, agile saves, and footwork (not typical for goalkeepers of that era). At Universidad Católica, he won the Primera División in 1966, being one of the team's stars, and remained there until 1970, when he signed with Unión Española. At the Hispano club, he would be part of one of the most glorious periods in the team's history, winning the Primera División title in 1973 and 1975, and reaching the final of the Copa Libertadores in 1975, where they lost to C.A. Independiente of Argentina. The following year, he was transferred to Everton de Viña del Mar, where he again won the Primera División, defeating his former club, Unión Española, in the final. He later played for O'Higgins, Audax Italiano, Deportes Arica, and ultimately returned to Universidad Católica, where he won the Primera División in 1987 and retired the following year at the age of 44.
For the Chilean National Team, Vallejos played twenty matches. He was called up for the 1967 Copa América (then called the South American Championship), although he was the substitute for Juan Olivares. His debut for the National Team came on August 18, 1968, in a 2-1 victory against Peru, in the framework of the Copa del Pacífico. In the early 1970s, Vallejos defended Chile's colors in a number of friendlies against Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, Ecuador, and Portugal, earning him a call-up to the 1974 World Cup by coach Luis Álamos. Initially, Vallejos was set to be the backup goalkeeper to Juan Olivares, but an injury to the viñamarino goalkeeper placed him as the starter in that World Cup, which Chile played against East Germany, West Germany, and Australia. The following year, he defended the Chilean National Team in the 1975 Copa América, playing in two matches, and later in the qualifiers for Argentina 1978 against Peru, which ultimately marked his last game for the Chilean team.
