BalancedINFO:Franco Costanzo is a former Argentine footballer who played as a goalkeeper. Born in Río Cuarto, Córdoba (05/09/1980), he began his career at River Plate, where he made his debut in 2001 in a 6-2 victory against Estudiantes de La Plata. He played every match in the Torneo Clausura 2001, but in September 2001, he suffered a cruciate ligament injury in a Copa Libertadores match against Palmeiras of Brazil and was replaced by River Plate idol Ángel David Comizzo. Costanzo returned to play in June 2003 in a 2-2 draw against Boca Juniors and regained his starting position, winning the Torneo Clausura 2003 and the Torneo Clausura 2004. However, a shoulder injury in a match against Santos Laguna of Mexico, along with a significant drop in performance, forced his departure from River Plate in the 2005-2006 season, joining Deportivo Alavés. In July 2006, he signed for Basel in Switzerland, for two million euros for 85% of his transfer fee. During his five years with the Swiss club, he won six titles: three league championships and three Swiss Cups, becoming an idol for the blue and red team. After his stint at Basel, he joined Olympiacos in Greece, where he won the Greek Super League and announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 31. However, after nearly two years of inactivity, he returned to football to play for Universidad Católica in Chile, staying with the club until 2017, when he retired definitively from professional football.
For the National Team, Costanzo was the starting goalkeeper for Argentina in the 1997 South American U-17 Championship and the FIFA U-17 World Championship held in Egypt the same year. He also played as the starting goalkeeper in the South American U-20 Championship and the FIFA U-20 World Cup in 1999, which was played in Nigeria. For the senior team, he only played one match: a friendly on June 17, 2003, which ended in a 2-2 draw against Uruguay, being called up by Marcelo Bielsa. Once dubbed the 'goalkeeper of the future' for Argentina, Costanzo, due to numerous injuries, perhaps did not have the career expected of him, although he eventually won titles with every team he played for, except for Deportivo Alavés.
