BalancedINFO:Ronaldo Giovanelli is a former Brazilian footballer who played as a goalkeeper. Born in São Paulo (11/20/1967), he began his professional career in 1987 with S.C. Corinthians Paulista. He made his professional debut on February 7, 1988, in a friendly match against São José, which ended in a 0-0 draw. At that time, he was the third goalkeeper for the team, which had Waldir Peres and Carlos. The great goalkeeper Carlos, who was then the goalkeeper of the Brazilian national team, lost his starting position to Ronaldo before being sold to Turkey. At the age of 20, Ronaldo inherited the number 1 jersey. Due to his outstanding performances, especially in the two matches of the 1988 Paulista final against Guarani, where Corinthians won their 20th Paulista title, Corinthians decided to sell legendary goalkeeper Carlos and kept Ronaldo in the squad. In the 1988 Brazilian Championship that same year, Ronaldo stood out as the best penalty saver in the tournament, which did not allow draws and went straight to penalty shootouts. Ronaldo is the fourth player with the most matches (602) for Corinthians, behind only Wladimir, Cássio, and Luizinho. For Corinthians, Ronaldo won the Campeonato Paulista in 1988, 1995, and 1997, the Brazilian Championship in 1990, the Supercopa do Brasil in 1991, the Copa Bandeirantes in 1994, and the Copa do Brasil in 1995, whose final is remembered for the goalkeeper's memorable performances. He is remembered as one of the biggest idols of S.C. Corinthians and arguably their greatest-ever goalkeeper, together with Cássio, Gylmar, and Dida.
After leaving Corinthians in 1998, Ronaldo was signed by Fluminense to help the club in the 2nd division of the Brazilian Championship that year. However, after a blunder in a match against Juventus, he was responsible for the team's relegation to the 3rd division. After that, he had stints with Cruzeiro, Internacional de Limeira, Portuguesa, Ponte Preta, Gama, ABC Futebol Clube, Metropolitano, and Portuguesa Santista, where he played in the Campeonato Paulista in 2005 and 2006, and later retired. Ronaldo was called up to the Brazilian national team by Paulo Roberto Falcão, who took over after the 1990 World Cup and was the second goalkeeper for the national team in the 1991 Copa América. Falcão failed in his role and was soon replaced by Carlos Alberto Parreira, who did not call up Ronaldo due to his strong temperament, frequent criticism of referees, and heated arguments with teammates, which granted him 16 red cards throughout his Corinthians career. In 1993, when Parreira could not call up his preferred goalkeepers (Taffarel and Zetti) for a friendly against Germany, he was forced to call up the Corinthians goalkeeper for the match. Ronaldo started in Brazil's 2-1 loss but stood out by making a crucial save against striker Klinsmann. However, after that occasion, Ronaldo was only called up for the Brazilian national team again in 1995, but since it coincided with his wedding date, he decided to withdraw from the friendly match effectively ending his chances for future call-ups.
