INFO:
Sergio Villar is a former Uruguayan footballer who played as a right-back. Born in Montevideo (05/01/1944), he began his sports career in the youth divisions of Uruguay, playing for Club Sportivo Cerrito and Club Canillitas. After a stint with Club Defensor (now Defensor Sporting), San Lorenzo paid 10 million pesos for his transfer in 1968. His impact was immediate, as that same year, Villar was part of the legendary team "Los Matadores," coached by the Brazilian Tim, which won the Primera División Championship undefeated. Villar also became a two-time champion with San Lorenzo in 1972 (winning the Torneo Metropolitano and the Torneo Nacional), and they once again won the Primera División undefeated in 1974. Despite his long and successful tenure at San Lorenzo, in 1981, after a disagreement with the then-coach Victorio Cocco, the management decided to sell him to All Boys, a Second Division Argentine team, where he ended his professional career. Sergio Villar is one of the greatest legends of C.A. San Lorenzo de Almagro, being the player who has defended its colors the most, with 446 appearances over 13 seasons. Additionally, along with R. Telch, V. Cocco, and A. Irusta, he is the player who has won the most titles for the Boedo team, with four championships. In his honor, a section of San Lorenzo's stadium, the Nuevo Gasómetro, bears his name. It is expected that when San Lorenzo inaugurates its third stadium on Avenida La Plata, Villar, known as "El Sapo," will give the initial kick-off, as he is the player with the most matches and championships obtained playing at the Gasómetro. Sergio Villar is undoubtedly one of the greatest and most legendary full-backs to have ever played in Argentine football and certainly the best to have played for San Lorenzo.
