Defence-MindedINFO:Pedro Omar was an Argentine footballer who played as a right-back. Born in Zárate, Buenos Aires (08/10/1898), he was discovered by Club Atlético Atlanta while playing in the nearby city of Campana, though he began his First Division career on April 16, 1919, in a 2-1 victory over Asociación Atlética Eureka at Sportivo Barracas' stadium, playing for Club Atlético San Lorenzo de Almagro. Don Pedro was one of the most respected figures in Argentine sports at the time, not only for his outstanding performances for the Boedo club but also for his sportsmanship on the field. He played for 13 years in the First Division of Argentine football, winning championships in 1923, 1924, and 1927, and finishing as runner-up in 1925 and 1926. He was also part of the National Team from 1924 to 1929, playing in 4 official matches and several friendlies. He was a central back, short in stature but proud, with an exuberant personality that radiated from every pore, cerebral in his approach. Omar's style had much in common with Castagnola's tackling skills and Bidoglio's ability to support the attack; more than once, after a brilliant, invariably clean tackle, he would move up the field with effective dribbling, directly setting up an attack for his teammates. Despite the standout players, both young and veteran, who were prominent in his era, Omar managed to shine distinctly and was an exemplary back in every way, contributing to the rapid and surprising strength and popularity that Club San Lorenzo de Almagro achieved. Unfortunately, when professionalism was introduced into Argentine football, San Lorenzo decided not to retain the now veteran back, despite his offer to play for the club without charging a single cent. Don Pedro, a symbol of class and integrity in Argentine sports, ended his career in 1931 after playing two matches for River Plate.
