Defence-MindedINFO:João Miranda, better known simply as Miranda, is a former Brazilian footballer who played as a central defender. Born in Paranavaí, Paraná (07/09/1984), Miranda made his debut for Coritiba in 2004, where he won his first title by claiming the Campeonato Paranaense. Due to his performances with the Brazilian club, he moved to Europe the following year, signing for Sochaux for approximately two million euros. After one season with the French club, he was loaned to São Paulo in July 2006 and was permanently acquired in March 2007 for around 1.2 million euros. At São Paulo, he became a key part of the defense and helped the team win three consecutive league titles in 2006, 2007, and 2008. Internationally, he played in the Copa Libertadores, with his greatest success being the runner-up finish in 2006. Five years later, on July 12, 2011, Miranda signed with Atlético Madrid, making his debut on July 28 in the Europa League, though he was sent off in his first match. His La Liga debut came on September 10, 2011, in a defeat against Valencia. On December 8, he played his first Copa del Rey match, losing to Albacete. On March 11, 2012, he scored his first goal for Atlético in a 2-0 win over Granada, and on April 19, he netted his first European goal in the Europa League semifinals against Valencia, contributing to a 4-2 victory. On May 9, 2012, Miranda won his first title with Atlético by defeating Athletic Club 3-0 in the Europa League final. On August 31, 2012, Atlético won the UEFA Super Cup by defeating Chelsea 4-1, with Miranda scoring the fourth goal. In the 2012-13 season, Miranda formed a solid defensive partnership with Diego Godín, making Atlético the league's best defensive team and helping goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois win the Zamora Trophy. On May 17, 2013, Miranda scored the decisive goal in extra time of the Copa del Rey final against Real Madrid, giving Atlético their first victory over their rivals in 14 years. In the 2013-14 season, Miranda and Godín again led the league’s best defense, helping Atlético win La Liga. In the Champions League, Atlético reached the final but lost 4-1 in extra time to Real Madrid. At the start of the following season, Miranda won the Spanish Super Cup. However, injuries and suspensions limited his participation, and he alternated the starting role with José María Giménez. Despite this, Atlético finished the season as the second-best defensive team. On June 30, 2015, Serie A club Inter Milan announced they had signed Miranda on a two-year loan for 4 million euros, with an obligation to purchase him outright for an additional 11 million euros on July 1, 2017, or possibly earlier under certain conditions. This obligation was activated after Miranda made his season debut for Inter on July 20, 2016. Miranda made his debut for Inter on August 23, starting the season with a 1-0 home victory over Atalanta. He played 32 matches that season, scoring once in a 3-1 win against Sampdoria at San Siro on February 20, 2016. He was also sent off twice in his first year with the Nerazzurri, first on September 27, 2015, for a foul on Nikola Kalinić in a 4-1 home defeat to Fiorentina, ending Inter's unbeaten start to the season. On July 26, 2019, it was announced that Miranda's contract with Inter was mutually terminated. The club also confirmed that he was set to join the Chinese club Jiangsu Suning. However, on February 28, 2021, Jiangsu announced that the club would be dissolved, and as a result, all contracted players, including Miranda, were released. On March 6, 2021, before the derby against Santos in the Campeonato Paulista, São Paulo president Julio Casares confirmed Miranda’s return on a free transfer after days of negotiations. He signed a 1-year and 8-month contract, and after playing 70 matches since his return, on January 11, 2023, he announced his retirement from professional football, having played a total of 780 matches in his career.
