Martín Silva is a Uruguayan footballer, naturalized Paraguayan, who plays as a goalkeeper. Born in Montevideo, Uruguay (25/03/1983), he began his career in the youth divisions of Defensor Sporting Club. He made his debut in the Uruguayan First Division on August 18th, 2002, against Plaza Colonia at the Estadio Luis Franzini. He stood out for his excellent performances in the Copa Libertadores in 2006 and 2007. He was one of the most prominent players on the violet team. He was also one of the players called up by Óscar Washington Tabárez to be part of the Uruguayan national team. In August 2011, Silva reached an agreement for five seasons with Club Olimpia of Paraguay. With this club, he would be crowned champion of the 2011 Clausura Tournament, being one of the pillars of the team, with outstanding performances in every match he played, defending the striped colors. On the penultimate matchday, on December 11, 2012, in the Clausura Tournament, he scored a goal from the penalty spot, which gave Olimpia a victory over Sol de América, thus marking his first goal in his entire football career. In 2013, Silva played in the Copa Libertadores, performing remarkably well in goal for the striped team. Olimpia reached the tournament final, with the Uruguayan goalkeeper being a key figure in all stages. In that final, they faced Atlético Mineiro, featuring Ronaldinho. In the first leg played in Asunción, the striped team won 2-0; the Brazilian team won the return leg by the same scoreline and ultimately prevailed in the penalty shootout. He moved to Vasco da Gama after a great Copa Libertadores campaign, becoming one of the pillars for the promotion of the previously relegated club. Paradoxically, the following year, after a poor campaign, the "Admiral" was relegated to Serie B. In December 2018, it was confirmed that Martín Silva would leave Vasco da Gama to return to Paraguayan football, this time as a reinforcement for Club Libertad. Since then, he has had a very positive trajectory with the club, even being highlighted as the goalkeeper with the most saves during the 2020 CONMEBOL Libertadores Cup. Finally, in December 2021, it was confirmed that Martín Silva would remain with Club Libertad for at least one more season.
At the youth level, he participated in the 1999 U-17 South American Championship, held in Uruguay, achieving third place and qualification for the youth World Cup held in New Zealand. He was also part of the Uruguayan squad for the 2001 U-20 South American Championship held in Ecuador, and the U-20 South American Championship of 2003 held in February in Uruguay. The coach was Jorge Orosmán Da Silva. The Uruguayan U-20 team qualified for the final stage, but their performance there was poor: they obtained only one victory (against Ecuador), one draw (against Argentina), and lost the other 3 matches, thus being eliminated from the FIFA U-20 World Cup that same year. Martín Silva was the starting goalkeeper throughout the championship, except in the last match against Brazil, where he was replaced by Sebastián Viera. After several call-ups and appearances on the substitute bench, his debut in goal for the senior national team occurred on August 12, 2009. It was under the management of coach Óscar Washington Tabárez in a friendly against Algeria, which ended in a 1-0 defeat. He was part of the Uruguayan squad that finished fourth in the 2010 South Africa World Cup and champion of the 2011 Copa América in Argentina, on both occasions being the third-choice goalkeeper behind Fernando Muslera and Juan Castillo. He did not accumulate any minutes in these tournaments and wore the number 23 jersey. He played his second match with the Uruguayan national team on June 23, 2013, during a Confederations Cup match against Tahiti, which ended in an 8-0 victory for the "Celeste". On May 12, 2014, the coach of the Uruguayan national team, Óscar Washington Tabárez, included Silva in the provisional list of 28 players with whom preparation for the 2014 World Cup began. Silva has participated with the Uruguayan National Team in 3 World Cups, 4 Copa América tournaments, and one Confederations Cup, although he never managed to play a match in an international tournament, relegated to the bench behind Fernando Muslera.
