Attack/Defence Awareness Card: Balanced Nguyễn Minh Phương is widely regarded as one of the most intelligent and technically proficient midfielders in the history of Vietnamese football. Born in 1980, he rose to prominence with Cảng Sài Gòn before achieving his peak at Đồng Tâm Long An, where he captained the side to back-to-back V.League titles in 2005 and 2006. As a key figure in Vietnam’s national team from the early 2000s to 2010, he earned over 70 caps and was the team captain during the golden run to the AFC Asian Cup quarterfinals in 2007, one of Vietnam’s greatest international achievements. He also played a pivotal leadership role in Vietnam's AFF Cup 2008 victory, before retiring from international football shortly after.
On the field, Minh Phương was known as a deep-lying playmaker with exceptional composure, vision, and passing range. He dictated tempo with intelligent short passes and could deliver precise long balls to switch play. While not the most athletic or aggressive player, his positional sense, calmness under pressure, and ability to control the rhythm of a game made him the ideal midfield general. A reliable free-kick taker and set-piece specialist, Minh Phương rarely made flashy plays but instead focused on linking defense and attack smoothly. His quiet consistency, tactical intelligence, and leadership have earned him lasting respect as one of Vietnam’s most complete midfielders.
