Attack/Defence Awareness Card: Balanced Dennis Stevens was an inside-forward whose career bridged Bolton Wanderers’ 1958 FA Cup triumph and Everton’s 1962–63 league title. A Dudley-born schemer, he broke through at Bolton alongside Nat Lofthouse, won the Cup at Wembley in ’58, and in 1962 moved to Harry Catterick’s Everton, where he was ever-present for two straight league seasons and helped the Blues lift the championship in 1963; he also scored in the 4–0 Charity Shield win over Manchester United that August. Besides, he was also a cousin of Duncan Edwards, a detail often noted in contemporary reports and obituaries.
On the pitch, Stevens was a hard-working, industrious inside-forward who linked midfield to attack, arrived late in the box, and knitted moves for the front line—an attacking midfielder in modern terms. Known for his work rate, bravery, and selfless team play. He hardly sought elaborate dribbles, preferring crisp, accurate passing, and he never hesitated to make a run—whether to rescue a teammate or to pull defenders out of position. In the box he was more a late-arriver than a spearhead, finishing cut-backs and second phases, but he could also drive at a set defence and get shots off early from the edge. Pressing industriously without the ball and showing plenty of bravery in traffic, he brought balance to strike partners by doing the graft between build-up and finish—steady influence over showy flourishes.
