INFO:Joe Harvey spent much of his career at Newcastle United. Before joining The Magpies, Harvey was an established inside forward, at Newcastle he began to settle in the half-back position. It only took him one game to become the club captain and he held the position until the end of his playing career making him the longest serving captain in the club's history. The Yorkshireman was an uncompromising competitor who had great stamina and always fought until the last kick. He concentrated on breaking up the opponents 's play with tough tackles whilst occasionally initiating attacks and often getting forwards to take long shots from the forwards and wingers 's passes.

He was a very underated midfielder. Tough and lead by example, but he was extremely professional and regimental in the way he marshalled his midfield.
Paul Joanou in 'Newcastle United Cult Heroes' wrote:
lean and strong, a tough, uncompromising wing-half who performed best when the contest was at its most fierce
Ken McKenzie from the Journal in 1951 wrote:
Why Joe has not been capped for his country is a football mystery. Maybe it is not too late, for Harvey is still numbered among the best right half-backs in the game.
