Nguyễn Ngọc Thanh is a central or defensive midfielder. Thanh played for South Vietnam team for ten years (1957-1967), of which 7 years (1959-1965) as captain. In 4-2-4 formation at that time, the positions of Nguyen Ngoc Thanh and Do Thoi Vinh were considered the number one choice and were almost constant for a long time. Midfielder Thanh participated in many international competitions, of which, the highest achievement was was the gold medal at SEAP Games 1 (Thailand-1959) and Merdeka Cup (Malaysia-1966). He was invited to play for All Stars Team of Asia having a match against Fulham in 1966.
Thanh was a tireless runner, who ran all the time in the midfield. Although he does not have an ideal body shape, in return Thanh has plenty of tactics intelligence, decent technique and superb stamina to move widely and run tirelessly, so is fondly nicknamed "Lungless man". In addition to technique and stamina, Thanh is also a good long-ranger and efficient playmaker. Revealing his secret, he said: "I know that I must have good stamina to play well, especially playing in the midfield, so every day I persistently run several dozen kilometers regardless of rain or shine." During matches, Nguyen Ngoc Thanh was always diligent and present everywhere and was considered the lung of the team. It was he who enriched Do Thoi Vinh's flamboyant playing style in his partner's work and was ready to intervene in every hot spot on the field.
