He played for Bolton Wanderers from 1947 to 1961 and was a member of the 1958 FA Cup winning team when Bolton beat Manchester United. He also played six matches for the England national team in 1958, including all four matches in the 1958 FIFA World Cup. Together with his right-back partner, Roy Hartle, he formed one of the most feared defensive combinations in English football. Ian Seddon in 'Ah'm Tellin' Thee: Tommy Banks' wrote: He knew (as did knowledgeable football fans come to realise) that apart from the hard uncompromising Tommy Banks here was a gifted footballer. He could pass the ball well, was reasonable in the air, and he could read a game of football. It was a man 's game back then, his unquestionable ability sadly often being lost in translation due to his physical approach. Spoiler: show |

Another player from my hometown. I've seen him around town a few times but he sadly is suffering with dementia nowadays |
