Jock Rutherford, a legendary winger born in Percy Main, North Shields, Northumberland, was renowned for his exceptional longevity in football. Over his career, he played nearly 600 Football League and FA Cup matches, a remarkable achievement, especially considering that four seasons were lost to World War I. He spent ten successful seasons with Newcastle United during a period when the club was a dominant force in English football. Rutherford helped Newcastle secure three First Division titles (1904–05, 1906–07, and 1908–09) and featured in five FA Cup finals. Despite their frequent appearances, Newcastle only won the trophy once during his time, defeating Barnsley 2–1 in a replay of the 1910 final.

Nicknamed "the Newcastle Flyer," Rutherford was known for his incredible speed and precise ball control as an outside right. His dribbling skills were equally impressive but are more about effecient rather than fancy movements, allowing him to glide past defenders with ease and maintain control even under pressure. Rutherford also had a knack for scoring goals himself, with his incisive run.

Rutherford's consistency and endurance on the pitch cemented his status as one of the greats in the history of Newcastle United and English football.

Quote:
Jock may, in justice, be regarded as one of the greatest outside-rights of all time.

'The Toon: A complete history of Newcastle United Football Club' wrote:
The right-winger from Percy Main, Jack Rutherford, signed up in 1902. Frank Watt took the 17-year-old from Willington Athletic and later claimed that Rutherford was the club's greatest outside-right. He may still have had claim that title a century later. Rutherford was a magnificent footballer: he had magnetic control, electrifying pace and a sure touch near goal, as his career total of 92 strikes in 334 games indicates. ... When the inside-right 'Gentleman Jim' Howie arrived from Bristol Rovers in the close season of 1903, he and Rutherford quickly developed a telepathic understanding which would serve them as a United attacking partnership for seven years and more than 200 games. Howie was as inelegant as Rutherford was fluent; but 'Gentleman Jim' would deply his stumbling, stuttering run to take players away from Rutherford and leave winger free to scorch in on goal.

'Forward, Arsenal!" wrote:
Now twenty-nine, and already losing most of his fair hair, Rutherford had a reputation as high as that of men like Billy Meredith and Steve Bloomer. ... At outside-right was Jock Rutherford, then a dodging, flying strippling, and the attack was led by the great Colin Veitch.

Quote:
Has all the qualities of a great winger - speed, footcraft, coolness, judgement. Very deadly when he takes the inward course, and from the line delivers accurate centres lades with peril.

'Newcastle United: The Greatest Days 1904 to 1911' wrote:
Everton missed theirs, Appleyard scored his for Newcastle to win the game after Rutherford had scored from a corner after the goal keeper had only managed to parry the ball... The all too familiar feeling of 'it's not our day' was beginning once again to gnaw at the vitals of the Geordies when Wilson picked up a crossfield pass from Veitch, charged down his wing, crossed and in charge Rutherford, who had just recovered from an injury, to meet the ball and head home.

Quote:
A model winger with a fine turn of speed and a rare dicrimination.
