Over his career, he played nearly 600 Football League and FA Cup matches, a remarkable achievement, especially considering that four seasons were lost to World War I. He spent ten successful seasons with Newcastle United during a period when the club was a dominant force in English football. Rutherford helped Newcastle secure three First Division titles (1904–05, 1906–07, and 1908–09) and featured in five FA Cup finals. Despite their frequent appearances, Newcastle only won the trophy once during his time, defeating Barnsley 2–1 in a replay of the 1910 final. Nicknamed "the Newcastle Flyer," Rutherford was known for his incredible speed and precise ball control as an outside right. His dribbling skills were equally impressive but are more about effecient rather than fancy movements, allowing him to glide past defenders with ease and maintain control even under pressure. Rutherford also had a knack for scoring goals himself, with his incisive run. Rutherford's consistency and endurance on the pitch cemented his status as one of the greats in the history of Newcastle United and English football. Spoiler: show |
