Attack/Defence Awareness Card: Attack Minded Walter Bennett was an English winger who played for Sheffield United and later Bristol City in the late 1800s and early 1900s. After starting at Mexborough, he joined United in 1896 and became a key figure in their success, helping win the FA Cup in 1899, the First Division title in 1902, and earning five England caps between 1901 and 1903. He later played for Bristol City, contributing to their promotion to the First Division in 1906.
Though stocky and thickset, Bennett was surprisingly fast. He was known for his powerful shooting, clever dribbling, and accurate crossing, with some calling him “one of the deadliest wingers in the country.”
Quote:
WALTER BENNETT joined the United from Mexborough, and, when a member of that now defunct team, shot goals as if they were sparrows. All Mexboro’ now visits Bramall-lane to see him play. When at his best he deserves their patronage. Is very fast – faster than one would think to look at him - can shoot like the rush of a cannon ball, dribble and pass to perfection, and on his day is one of the deadliest wingers in the country. Has scored some wonderful goals in his day, and still gets them, though they were not forthcoming in this year’s internationals. His fans argue he hits the ball harder than any man in England.
Quote:
He was therefore a stocky, thickset man, an unusual shape for a winger, but somehow it worked for him. Possessing a powerful shot, Bennett was a clever dribbler and good crosser. And he had the knack of arriving from the right at just the right time to meet crosses from the left.
Quote:
At a critical stage of the game Bennett came along, beat three men single-handed in midfield, and shot from long range. The ball rose, rose, rose, and meeting George, the goalkeeper, burst its way through his, outstretched hands, and found the net, a perfect pandemonium ensuing
