Sam Chedgzoy was a right winger who joined First Division Everton in 1910. He made his Football League debut against Newcastle United in December that year. By 1914, Chedgzoy had secured a regular spot in Everton’s lineup, contributing significantly to their 1914-15 League Championship victory with 30 appearances.

He capped 8 times for England. He also represented The Football League on 5 occasions.

Chedgzoy played a pivotal role in altering football’s laws. In 1924, he exploited a new rule allowing goals directly from corners by dribbling along the byline and scoring during a game at White Hart Lane. This surprising tactic, along with a similar goal by Arsenal’s John Rutherford in the same match, prompted a rule change a year later, mandating that a corner-taker could touch the ball only once before another player intervened.

His playstyle was characterized by exceptional pace, impresive ball control, precise crossing, and an ability to maintain his stride while delivering the ball, making him a valuable asset on the right wing. Sam Chedgzoy was a key playmaker for two of Everton's League-top-scorers across different eras. Before and after World War I, he provided vital service to Bobby Parker and Wilf Chadwick respectively. Additionally, he played a significant role in supporting a young Dixie Dean during his early days at the club.
