Bill Garraty was a key but almost forgotten player of Aston Villa between 1897 and 1906, making over 220 appearances and playing a major role during one of the club’s most successful periods. His best season came in 1899–1900, when he scored 27 league goals, making him the top scorer in the First Division that year. He later added to his legacy by scoring the winning goal in the 1905 FA Cup Final against Newcastle United. Garraty also represented England once in 1903.
Garraty was known for his strength, stamina, decent pace, crafty skills and never-say-die attitude, usually playing as an inside forward or center forward. He had a powerful shot, sharp positional sense, and the work rate to press high. His style combined physical presence with smart link-up play, making him both a scoring threat and a good build-up player.
