Steve Smith was a key left winger for Aston Villa from 1893 to 1901, making 187 appearances and scoring 42 goals. He played an important role during the club’s golden era, helping Villa win five Football League titles and the FA Cup in 1895. His performances earned him an England cap in 1895, in which he scored against Scotland. After leaving Villa, he played for Portsmouth and later served as player-manager at New Brompton. Though a reliable performer, frequent injuries limited his availability and arguably prevented him from reaching even greater heights in his career.
On the pitch, Smith was known for his particularly close dribbling, precise crossing, and powerful shot. Though modest in size, he was strongly built and hard to dispossess. He passed and crossed with accuracy, often creating chances from the left wing. In addition to his creative play, Smith had a sharp instinct for pouncing on loose balls in the box, turning half-chances into goals. Despite facing rough challenges from defenders and recurring injuries, he remained composed and unselfish, combining flair with resilience to become one of the most effective wingers of his era.
Quote:
One of the most effective players on the left wing since the time of Hodgetts. A particularly close dribbler, with a fine turn of speed, he was only robbed of the ball with difficulty, and with anything approaching a chance would centre most accurately. Being on the small side, he often suffered from the lungeous opponent, and while with the Villa received more than his share of hard knocks. Quiet and unassuming, he proved a most unselfish partner, and could always be relied upon to do his utmost. A modest winner and a good loser.
Quote:
An accomplished crosser of the ball who could whip in a stunning shot and rise to the big occasions,
Quote:
Steve was particularly noted for his accuracy of his passing.
Quote:
He was powerfully built at 11st 6lb, and Douglas Lammy quotes a report that states: ‘with great speed he also passes very accurately and is further a safe shot at goal’.
