He played an important role during the club’s golden era, helping Villa win five Football League titles and the FA Cup in 1895. His performances earned him an England cap in 1895, in which he scored against Scotland. After leaving Villa, he played for Portsmouth and later served as player-manager at New Brompton. Though a reliable performer, frequent injuries limited his availability and arguably prevented him from reaching even greater heights in his career. On the pitch, Smith was known for his particularly close dribbling, precise crossing, and powerful shot. Though modest in size, he was strongly built and hard to dispossess. He passed and crossed with accuracy, often creating chances from the left wing. In addition to his creative play, Smith had a sharp instinct for pouncing on loose balls in the box, turning half-chances into goals. Despite facing rough challenges from defenders and recurring injuries, he remained composed and unselfish, combining flair with resilience to become one of the most effective wingers of his era.
