Dương Văn Thà was one of South Vietnam’s most versatile and tireless footballers during the late 1960s and early 1970s. He began his career as a central midfielder, where his intelligence, vision, and high work rate made him a natural organizer in the heart of the pitch. However, in 1967, during a match against Australia at the SEAP Games, German coach Karl-Heinz Weigang repositioned Thà to right-back, trusting his agility and marking ability to neutralize taller opponents. From that point onward, his role expanded — and his reputation grew as one of the most reliable and energetic flank players in Vietnamese football.

Nicknamed "Thần mã" (Divine Steed), Thà became known for his explosive acceleration, relentless stamina, and willingness to cover the entire right flank. While he often played in defense, he was just as effective going forward, especially in the 4–2–4 system, where he operated as a right-wing forward. His game was built on quick runs, overlapping support, and precise crosses into the box — always playing with a sense of urgency and commitment. Beyond his technical attributes, Dương Văn Thà stood out for his leadership, resilience, and team-first mentality, often seen as the emotional engine of both his club (Cảng Sài Gòn) and the national team.
