After six years with Sparta, in 1916 he signed for Slavia Prague, their city rivals. With the red and whites, he played several friendly matches against Viennese clubs in 1917, standing out for his excellent performance, especially in the matches against the amateur teams FK Austria Vienna (10-0) and Wiener AC (1-0). As a result, Hugo Meisl and Heinrich Retschury called him up to the Austrian national team that same year. Until 1918, the region of Bohemia, with its capital Prague, belonged to the Austrian part of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, so the inclusion of Bohemian footballers (of both German and Czech descent) in the national team was common at that time. Powerful Prague clubs, such as Slavia, Sparta, and DFC, regularly contributed players to the Austrian national team until 1918. At Slavia Prague, the center forward gradually established himself as a key player after the war and captained the team for many years. In 1925, Vaník won the first official Czechoslovak championship with the Red and Whites and, with 13 goals, also became the first top scorer in the newly founded Asociační liga (Association League). Throughout his career, he scored 247 goals in 449 league matches, making him one of the most prolific strikers in the long history of Czech and Czechoslovak football.
