In 1949, he was crowned Peruvian First Division Champion with Universitario. He played in 42 derby matches and scored 17 goals, making him the third-highest scorer in this category. He is best remembered for his derby duels with Guillermo Delgado, captain of Alianza Lima. He played 13 seasons for the "U", 6 of which he played alongside Lolo Fernández. He was a mandatory addition to all the local teams against the most notable Brazilian, Argentine, or Uruguayan teams that came to Lima. Offers came in from Boca Juniors and Fluminense. "Gringo"'s response was always: "Nobody would move me from Lima... Lima is more beautiful than Paris." He played for renowned European teams of the time, but not even an offer from SS Lazio in Italy could convince him. No one could have imagined that "Toto" would one day leave the cream jersey. In 1959, he moved to Sporting Cristal after a negotiation (200,000 soles at the time), which was the first major transfer in Peruvian football. Terry retired in 1960. As a professional footballer, "Toto" Terry scored 111 goals in 210 official matches in the First Division, a significant average considering that official tournaments in his era were short (18 matches). Including international matches, friendlies, and matches for the National Team, it is estimated that Terry scored well over 200 goals. Spoiler: show Spoiler: show Spoiler: show |
