Born into a Hungarian family in Medhadia, Romania, Kovács moved to Timișoara as a child. From 1924, he started playing officially for Chinezul Timișoara and made his first division debut in 1928 for Banatul Timișoara.
He played for Ripensia Timișoara for a year and then for CA Oradea, where he won the only championship of his career in the last four games of the 1935-36 season. In France, after one year with Valenciennes, Kovács played two more seasons with CA Oradea and two with Tricolor Ploiești.
During World War II, he played for Nagyváradi AC and Gamma FC, and ended his career at CS Crișana Oradea in 1947, after overcoming Ferar Cluj.
Between 1929 and 1938, he played 37 times for the Romanian national team and scored 6 goals. He participated in three world championships. In 1941 he played once for the Hungarian national team and scored one goal.
