Holmberg was an important contributor to ÖIS success during the 1925/1926 and 1927/1928 seasons, when the team won the Allsvenskan. On both occasions, Holmberg became the top scorer in the Swedish league and, together with Sven Rydell , was the team's star player. However, he never became Swedish champion; this was due to the fact that the Allsvenskan had no SM status during the years 1925-1930. In the 1931/1932 season Holmberg again won the scoring league when ÖIS finished second.
On three occasions between 1925 and 1931 he was loaned to IFK Göteborg and played in friendly matches against Blackburn Rovers FC , West Ham United FC and Kjøbenhavns Boldklub . [ 2 ]
Carl-Erik Holmberg is (as of 2012) the player who has scored the most goals in competition for Öis, no less than 193. He is also (2012) the second player with the most appearances for the club, after Niclas Sjöstedt .
