Info:

Karol Dobay (2 December 1928 – 20 December 1982) was a Slovak football forward and representative of Czechoslovakia. He earned three caps for the Czechoslovak national team between 1951 and 1953, and twice for the Czech B national team. He made 152 league appearances and scored 37 goals. He played for Jednota Košice (1947–1951, 1958–1959) and Dukla Prague (1952–1958), with whom he became champion of the republic three times (1953, 1956 and 1957/58). He started once in the European Cup.

A surprising heavy defeat for our representatives in Janov
Italy - Czechoslovakia 3:0 (2:0)
Reporting by phone from Janov, Oldřich Žurman
As expected, the Italian team would want revenge at home at all costs, and the task for our representatives would be much more difficult in this match than in the spring in Prague. However, such a heavy defeat was not expected at all. It is true that our players fought with all their might in this match, but the shortcomings of our overall game plan became more evident than ever. If, in addition to the traditional attack, the midfielders also failed unexpectedly, and the Italians played a very good game, the result was practically decided. Our young national team, which this year deservedly earned its place in the 1954 World Cup in Switzerland, should not consider this heavy defeat in Italy a catastrophe:

THE ATTACKING LINE COMPLETELY FAILED

The attacking line played against the Italians in Janov as in recent matches, without wingers. Čurgali, whose task was to give his all in the first half, disappointed; he didn't provide a single pass on goal in the entire first half and only tried to penetrate the defense himself, but to no avail. Dobay played somewhat better, but his style of play is also completely flawed. Like Čurgali, he held onto the ball for too long, stood still, dribbled in place, and spun around so much that the Italians dispossessed him. If Čurgali didn't cross at all, then Dobay's crosses either ended up in the goalkeeper's hands or went straight out of play.

Dobay, in fact, forgot that there was a fairly strong wind and that the ball needed to be directed accordingly. Both Čurgali and Dobay tried to fight honorably, but their understanding of the game is completely flawed and doesn't live up to the concept of modern football, let alone the national team's style of play. Pazdera, who came on in the second half, was somewhat better, and his soft crosses were certainly more dangerous. However, he also failed to live up to the expectations of a top-class winger.

If our attack played without wingers, unfortunately, it also played without a center forward this time. The technically and tactically superior Tegelhof was perfectly covered by the tough and reliable Rosetta, and due to his softness and unusual nervousness, he couldn't make an impact. He played imprecisely and further complicated matters by constantly drifting out of Rosetta's half towards the right flank of the attack, where three of our players were getting in each other's way and dispossessing one another. The two midfielders, Kačány and Pažický, had a very difficult task. With Tegelhof's failure, they had to try to provide some structure to the attack, but they failed to do so either. They fell into an unnecessary exchange of positions, their actions poorly thought out (which was particularly surprising in Kačány). Kačány also showed too much hesitation against the tough Chiappelli. Pažický returned to the edge of the defense (even though he was instructed to play further forward as a midfielder) and no longer had the energy to shoot. Otherwise, he played with his usual imprecision.
