Josef Luknar began his career in 1936 with Slovan Bratislava, then called SK Bratislava, playing in the Czechoslovak Championship. After the country's collapse in 1939, he began playing in the championship of independent Slovakia. He was one of the Slovak League's top scorers and won four league titles, becoming the first Slovak footballer to score 100 goals in the championship.
He ended his playing career with Olomouc ASO, where he was a player-coach, and subsequently worked as a coach at several smaller clubs: Dynamitka, Pezinok, and Modra. He died on May 13, 1966, while coaching in Modra at the age of 51.
