Michal Vičan began playing football in his native Hlohovec. First as a goalkeeper, then as a forward, and finally as a defender. In this position, he became one of the best defenders in the top flight of Czechoslovak football.
He won three consecutive Czechoslovak championship titles with ŠK Bratislava (1949–1951), adding another in 1955. He became Czechoslovakian runner-up twice in total, in 1952 and 1956. He ended his playing career at the age of 32 in 1957. He spent a total of 12 years with the Bratislava club and made 231 league appearances.
He made his debut for the national team on September 21, 1947. In Bucharest, the Czechoslovak national team easily defeated Romania 6–2. He played ten matches for Czechoslovakia, mostly friendlies, six of them as captain. His last match was on October 19, 1952, at the Dosza Stadium in Budapest, where he and his teammates lost 5-0 to Hungary, the home team, in front of 50,000 spectators. He played a total of 11 matches for the Czech B team.
