Gheorghe Albu started his career in 1924 in his hometown of Arad with AMEF Arad, from where he moved to the then Romanian runners-up Jiul Lupeni in 1928. At that time, the team was still participating in the highly competitive Arad District Championship, but failed to qualify for the 1928/29 Romanian Championship Final. In the 1929/30 season, Jiul Lupeni moved to the Oltenia District Championship, where they were superior to Oltul Slatina and the teams from Craiova, but faced massive hostility and therefore withdrew from the championship in the spring of 1930. Albu then returned to Arad and played for Gloria CFR Arad, with whom he immediately qualified for the 1929/30 season finals. After the foundation of the Romanian professional league, Divizia A, in 1932, he remained with Gloria CFR for another year before joining top Romanian club Venus Bucharest in 1933. With Venus, he won the Romanian championship four times, but made only one appearance in the 1939/40 season, so he moved to league rivals FC Craiova in 1940. Albu ended his career there in 1944.
