In his first spell at Palestra, he won three Mineros championships, in 1928, 1929, and 1930. In his second spell, after playing for Vasco, he was again a three-time state champion, in 1943, 1944, and 1945. Like other South Americans, he left Italy in the summer of 1935, concerned about a possible call-up for the upcoming war in Abyssinia, a region of present-day Ethiopia, as his "native" status had also allowed him to obtain Italian citizenship. He ended his career in 1946, playing alongside his brother Orlando, who would leave for Lazio the following year. Niginho left the pitch with 207 goals in 257 matches for Palestra/Cruzeiro, in his second spell, establishing himself as the club's greatest idol in the pre-Mineirão era.
