Douglas was a brazilian center back who became a naturalized dutchman and was known for his physical strength, aerial prowess and defensive solidity. He spent most of his career in European football, especially with FC Twente in the Netherlands. He joined the club as a youngster and quickly established himself as a regular, playing a key role in the club's historic 2009–10 Eredivisie conquest, as well as the Dutch Super Cup and Dutch Cup. With good positioning and anticipation, Douglas also stood out for his leadership on the pitch, becoming one of the most respected defenders in the Eredivisie during his time there. Naturalized Dutch, he was considered for the Netherlands national team, although he did not participate in official competitions. After leaving Twente, he had less memorable spells at clubs such as Dynamo Moscow, Trabzonspor and Sporting, without repeating the prominence he had in the Netherlands. With a direct and physical style of play, Douglas was the typical reliable defender, efficient in marking and confident in disputes, building a solid career in European football even away from the Brazilian spotlight.
