Marc Janko was a tall and gangly Austrian center forward, but with an imposing presence in the penalty area and a keen eye for goal, who built a solid career in European clubs and stood out as an attacking reference both in club football and for the Austrian national team. He rose to prominence at Red Bull Salzburg, where he enjoyed his peak as a goalscorer, scoring 39 goals in a single Austrian Bundesliga season (2008–09), impressing with his combination of height, positioning and precise finishing with both feet and with his head.

His ability to decide games led him to FC Twente in the Netherlands, where he was signed to compete for a position with the then young Luuk de Jong. At the Enschede club, Janko maintained his reputation as a goalscorer, being decisive in the Dutch Cup win in 2010–11, scoring the winning goal against Ajax. He also participated regularly in the Eredivisie and in European competitions. At Twente, despite not repeating the numbers he had in Austria, he stood out as a typical “number 9” reference, with almost no mobility, but still capable of fighting with defenders and finishing efficiently, especially inside the area.

He later played for clubs such as Porto, Trabzonspor, Sydney FC, FC Basel and other smaller clubs, always maintaining his identity as a fixed striker, with quick finishing and great aerial ability. In the Austrian national team, Janko was a constant presence for more than a decade, scoring important goals in the qualifiers and in tournaments such as Euro 2016, being an offensive reference and leader within the squad.
