Oussama Assaidi was a skilful, quick and creative Moroccan left winger and midfielder who rose to prominence in European football through his impressive performances for SC Heerenveen in the Eredivisie, which earned him a move to Liverpool, although his career was marked by ups and downs. Born in Morocco and raised in the Netherlands, Assaidi developed his attacking and technical style of play in the youth ranks of AZ Alkmaar, but particularly shined under Marco van Basten at Heerenveen, where he drew attention for his ability to break lines with quick dribbling, boldly run forwards and feed attackers with creative passes and accurate crosses.
At the Frisian club, he was one of the main attacking players between 2010 and 2012, forming one of the most dangerous offensive trios in the league, along with Luciano Narsingh and Bas Dost, with whom he had great chemistry. His explosive performance, marked by goals, assists and disconcerting dribbles, attracted the interest of Liverpool, who signed him in 2012. However, in the Premier League, he was unable to adapt to the physical pace and tactical intensity of English football, playing little for the Reds and was later loaned to Stoke City, where he had flashes of success but also failed to establish himself.
After his experience in England, Assaidi transferred to Al-Ahli in the United Arab Emirates and later returned to Dutch football to play for FC Twente, where he showed some good moments, but without the same brilliance and speed as he had at Heerenveen. He was frequently called up for the Moroccan national team between 2011 and 2015, taking part in the African Cup of Nations and World Cup qualifiers.
