Nico-Jan Hoogma was a Dutch defender from Heerenveen. Hoogma began his professional career with SC Cambuur, where he played from 1989 to 1992, scoring 10 goals in 98 Eredivisie appearances for the club. In 1992, he transferred to FC Twente in the Eredivisie, where he established himself as a regular starter for six consecutive seasons, amassing 223 appearances and 26 goals — in all official competitions.
In September 1998, Hoogma joined Hamburger SV in Germany, having gained recognition as a technical and robust defender. At HSV, he became a central figure in the defense for six seasons, making 177 appearances and scoring 13 goals in the Bundesliga. From 2001 onwards, he assumed the role of team captain, leading the club to victory in the German Bundesliga (DFB-Ligapokal) in 2003, and was a constant figure in European campaigns, including the 2000/01 Champions League.
In terms of playing style, Hoogma was recognized for his consistency, tactical sense, and physical presence in defense. He played as a central defender, with excellent positioning, anticipation, and good ball control, despite his lack of speed. These traits made him a consistent performer. His strong athleticism and natural leadership contributed to his role as a defensive line commander.
After leaving HSV in 2004, Hoogma returned to the Netherlands to finish his career at Heracles Almelo (2004–2006), where he was instrumental in their promotion back to the Eredivisie in 2005. After retiring as a player, he took up management and directorial positions in Dutch football.
