Ladislau da Guia was one of the first successful "big target man" goalscorer in Brazilian football. He made his debut in 1922 and played as a centre-forward for Bangu until 1940. He remains the club's all-time leading scorer, with 222 goals in 325 matches, averaging 0.68 goals per game. He was known as "Ladislau, o Tijoleiro" (the Bricklayer) due to his powerful shots, his trademark shot became famous as the "Tijolo quente" (Hot Brick), a dry, ferociously powerful drive that was regarded as one of the most devastating shots of its era. His free kicks and penalty kicks were so powerful that goalkeepers feared the force of the impact. Accounts from that era tell that the famous goalkeeper Aymoré Moreira was seriously injured and had to be substituted after attempting to save one of his shots.
A regular selection for the Rio de Janeiro State Representative Team, Ladislau was also called up for the 1930 FIFA World Cup but chose to remain with Bangu instead. He captained Bangu to their historic 1933 Campeonato Carioca triumph, the first professional football championship ever won in Rio de Janeiro. Despite his immense talent, contemporary reports often criticized his individualistic style of play and a tendency to become apathetic when his teammates failed to provide him with service, traits that made him as polarizing among supporters as he was brilliant on the pitch.
A giant for his era at 1.90 m and 85 kg, he was remembered as much for his aerial dominance as for what was arguably the hardest shot of his generation. Taking advantage of his imposing physique after retiring from football, he joined the police force and eventually retired as an officer of the Army's Special Police.
He was the brother of Domingos da Guia and the uncle of Ademir da Guia.
