INFO:
Ripley is a former side midfielder and winger, rarely used as centre forward. His career began in 1985 at Middlesbrough, where he played 311 matches and scored 31 goals. He left in 1992 and transferred to Blackburn Rovers, making 216 apperances until 1998, scoring 14 goals ─ most of which in the first two seasons ─ and winning the 1994-95 Premier League. He played also for Bolton Wanderers, Southampton, Barnsley and Sheffield Wednesday, where retired in 2001. He capped twice for England.
Considered one of the fastest players in English football during the 1990s, Ripley was a very good crosser who provided many assists especially for Alan Shearer. The centre forward himself said that many of his goals were possible thanks to Ripley and Wilcox. He mostly liked to go towards the byline and send a cross from there. Moreover he had a good physique that made him a danger when he ran down the side. When he played for Middlesbrough he was also renowned for being a good striker from the distance but at Blackburn he lost a bit of his scoring ability, becoming more an assist-man. Ripley had also good versatility, in fact he occasionally played also as centre forward (in the first match in that position he even scored two goals). Unfortunately he didn't have the consistency throughout the matches that could have led him to higher levels and many times he was replaced in the second half.
