Berger is a former left-side midfielder who could also played as attacking or central midfielder and other positions out of necessity. He spent the majority of his career at Slavia Praha and Liverpool. He played for the Czech team from 1991 to 1995 and 2008 to 2010 for a total 130 appearances and 34 goals. He had his best time with the "Reds", playing 196 matches, scoring 35 goals, winning FA Cup, UEFA Cup, FA Charity Shield and two Football League Cups. While he missed many matches in his first two seasons, he was more regular in the following two. His time at Liverpool ended after a bad knee injury that confined him to the bench even after his return. Berger also played for Borussia Dortmund, Portsmouth, Aston Villa and Stoke City. He capped for Czech Republic 44 times (twice as Czechoslovakia), scoring 18 goals.
Berger was a very good offensive player who didn't dislike to support the defence from time to time. He was distinguished by an all-action style of play, surging runs and notably powerful left-footed shots, mostly from long range. He possessed solid strength, pace off the ball, excellent dribbling skill, technique, but also understanding of the game that made him a good team player. He created many chances with his accurate passes, realising the needs of his team. His crosses were possibly among the fastest in the Premier League. Moreover, Berger was remarkable from set piece as he scored several times from free kick and once even directly from corner. However, he lacked consistency and the mentality to do well for the entire match. It wasn't rare that he would make a wrong pass that could be easily intercepted or deliver a bad shot that was easy for the goalkeeper to catch.
